Murray D. Morton, B.A., CLU, CFP®, ChFC, FMA, FCSI, "The Financial Coach," has been active in the Financial Planning profession since 1973. Murray currently manages over $70 million of client assets and developed "The Financial Coach Approach™" and “The Deep Simplicity Strategy™” to assist his clients with financial and lifestyle planning.
A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Murray also holds the following designations: Chartered Life Underwriter (1980); Chartered Financial Consultant (1989); CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (1996); Financial Management Advisor (2006) and was conferred as a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute in 2006.
Murray operates his financial planning practice from Etobicoke (west end of Toronto), Ontario. In 1999, he was named Regal Capital Planners' “Financial Planner of the Year.” As Branch Manager of one of the top branches in Cartier Partners Financial Group, Murray was recognized as “Top Recruiter” in 2000 and in June 2001, he was selected to receive the first Cartier Partners “Spirit of Partnership Award” (only 12 of 3500 financial planners were selected). In December 2003, Cartier Partners was acquired by DundeeWealth Management. In 2005, Murray transitioned to DundeeWealth Securities Corporation in order to offer his clients a wide choice of investment options. In December 2010, HollisWealth announced its acquisition by Scotia Bank.
In 2003, Murray’s son Matthew joined his practice and together they offer a team approach to serving their clients.
Since 2000, Murray has served as a member of a number of standing committees with the Investment Fund Institute of Canada's (IFIC) and was Chair of IFIC’s 2001 Conference Committee. He is Past Chair (2003) of the Financial Planning Standards Council, CFP® Panel of Examiners and Past President of Advocis (Toronto) (2003-04). Murray served as a member of HollisWealthWealth’s Advisory Committee to Management (ACTM) 2007-2010. In 2003, Murray was admitted to the International WHO’S WHO of Professionals.
Murray believes in being active in his community and has made “giving back” a life-long commitment. A scoutmaster for 30 years, he served as Scouting Commissioner for the City of Brampton from 1989 to 1991. He is Past Chair of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Brampton; Past President of Brampton's Flower City Kiwanis; Past President of the Beaver Bible Class and, currently, Director of the Beaver Show Committee. "The Beaver Show/Spring Fling" is Toronto's longest running musical and comedy sketch review and has raised over $2 million for community outreach. Murray attends North Bramalea United Church, where he is Past Chair of the Board, and is also Past Master of Chinguacousy Lodge 738 and is Past District Secretary and a Preceptor of Emmanuel Preceptory of the Knights Templar. In 2008, Murray was appointed as a Director of Morton Youth Services (MYS) in Barrie, Ont. MYS is an open detention centre for young offenders established by his late father, Judge M. Douglas Morton, QC.
While maintaining such a high level of professional and community service, Murray never forgets the importance of his family. He and his wife, Ellen, have made their home in Brampton for many years and are very proud of their three adult children – Matthew (Erica), Andrew (Andrea) and Melissa. A close knit family with a wide range of interests and talents, they are strongly supportive of each other.
As far as outside activities, Murray is an avid reader consuming four newspapers a day and at least fifteen books a year with a wide range; in 2010 from Malcolm Gladwell (What the Dog Saw); Taylor Branch (The Clinton Tapes); Wayne Dyer (The Shift), Mitch Albom (Have a Little Faith) to J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) plus eleven others. Murray and Ellen enjoy spending time travelling and relaxing at the family condo in Daytona Beach.
Matthew D. Morton, BA, graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2001 with a Bachelor of Musical Arts (Percussion). Following his graduation Matthew joined the customer service division of a large international mutual fund company where we worked with the public until February 2003 when he left to join Murray in his practice. In 2005, following the purchase of Cartier Partners by DundeeWealth, Matthew was appointed Branch Manager of the Etobicoke branch and served in that capacity until 2008. In 2008, Matthew joined DWM Securities (now HollisWealth) where he has worked closely with Murray ever since. Matthew and his wife, Erica, make their home in the east end of Toronto along with their daughter Mackenzie. Their activities include running, snowboarding, basketball, baseball and camping. Matthew’s other passion is music where he continues to play with various musical groups at a number of local Toronto establishments.
